Join us with Peter Blasser of Ciat Lonbarde and Ieaskul F. Mobenthy as he leads you through the build process of a Tocante, his touch-organ: synthmall.com/tocante/.

Participants will receive materials for one Tocante to build and take home. The baseline workshop price allows you to choose from Peter's selection of one of the following Tocante models in Redd or Green:

  • Thyris: the "Triangle Core" Tocante
  • Phashi: the "Sinewave Core" Tocante
  • Bistab: the "Squarewave Core" Tocante

The touchpad of the Tocante represents a pitch according to industry "preferred numbers," chosen by old wartime engineers for non-musical purposes. Here they form a unique and haunting musical scale, not unlike that of a gamelan or the neutral intervals of Persian music. Tocante Redd uses the alternative scale of the E12 series: 12, 18, 27, 39, 56, and 82. Bass Thyris and Bass Bistab are also available. Peter will bring a little extra of each flavor, but basically expect a chef's choice of your own. If you would like to request a specific flavor, please write: info@ctrl-mod.com, and Peter will try his best to accommodate.

Additionally, two special flavors are available in limited quantities for an additional $50. Karper uses 24 separate 8bit microcontrollers that parallel Karpluss-Strong string synthesizers in the Tocante scale. Each string has a trigger and two sources of "the noise of computation" or the least significant, hairiest bits magnified as 1bit music. Zenert derives its name from the source of its noise, a zener diode, and the spectral flavoring applied by a simple resonant circuit, the twin-t. Its operation diverges from the previous Tocante pieces, where finger-touch simply connected oscillator outputs to an amplifier. In Zenert, finger-touch injects the zener noise into the inputs of the flavoring circuits. To secure one of these options, please select accordingly from the dropdown menu.

BYOS - Bring Your Own Soldering Iron - please let us know if you need Control to provide you a soldering iron and tools, as we have limited availability. Participants should know rudimentary soldering techniques.

Workshop time is flexible from 12pm-8pm. Peter will be on-site all day long to accommodate participants' busy schedules. Ideally, he would like the participants to work altogether. You will be contacted via email to try and pinpoint the best working time for you and the other participants.
